Yoga Pose Of the Week 1

Updated: Dec 1, 2024

Paschimottanasana / Seated Forward Bend

Paschima (Sanskrit) literally means "west" but here refers to the back side of the body. Uttana means "stretching", and asana means "seat" or "pose". This asana stretches the entire anterior chain, hence the name.

Benefits: Sitting whilst bending over might look easy but it is a demanding pose, as well as a crucial one.

In this pose, the body stretches from the neck to the heels. This posture stimulates the internal organs and the entire nervous system and helps reducing fat accumulation.

Leaning forward in a Paschimottanasana is associated with bowing and humility which symbolises retiring or withdrawing gracefully. It can help calm the mind by providing relief from stress and mild depression, by reducing anxiety and fatigue, and by promoting a good sleep.

Focus: In this pose, the focus is on the abdominal area and your breath. It's a surrender pose; focus on releasing yourself a bit more with each exhale.

Who should not do it: Those with sciatica and disc herniation issues should avoid this pose or be careful in practicing.
